The white-tailed eagle disappeared from Ireland over one hundred years ago during a period of dramatic decline across most of Europe. Fifteen chicks were reintroduced into Killarney National Park, Kerry in the southwest of Ireland in 2007 and one of these birds has been sighted in Counties Down, Armagh and Tyrone, in Northern Ireland.
This impressive bird is the largest European eagle, with huge club-ended wings which make the bright white tail seem small. The head and beak are large and protrude forward, giving the eagle a vulture-like appearance. The white-tailed eagle requires large, open expanses of lake, coast or river valley near to undisturbed cliffs or large, old trees for nesting.
The reintroduction project will see fifteen young eagles from Norway reintroduced into Ireland each year for five years. It is hoped that this reintroduction program will replicate the achievement of a similar scheme in Scotland, where they have now been successfully breeding for many years.
